Ashanti stool from Ghana
The African royal seat or stool of the Ashanti people of Ghana is an important cultural and symbolic object traditionally reserved for kings, chiefs, and high-ranking dignitaries. These artfully crafted stools are not just seating, but represent power, authority, and spiritual connection with the ancestors.
Typically carved from a single piece of wood, Ashanti stools are characterized by their curved, ergonomic seats and detailed ornamentation. The legs and supports are often decorated with symbolic carvings that reflect social values, spiritual messages, or the owner's status. Particularly famous is the "Golden Stool" (Sika Dwa Kofi) , the highest symbol of the Ashanti kings, considered the embodiment of the people's soul.
Such stools are used in ceremonies and festivals and, depending on their significance, may be decorated with gold or other precious materials. Today, they are valued worldwide both as cultural objects and as sought-after collector's items.
